THE ENGLISH SIDE
IT´S TIME FOR HALLOWEEN
On the eve of All
Hallows, the festival of Halloween is celebrated. It is a tradition of celtic
roots transplanted by Irish and Scottish settlers and immigrants throughout
North America and spread out after World War II all over the world.
As a
sample of the English Speaking countries culture, this festival is celebrated in
schools, and, of course, we do so in our own.
Usually, it has been carried
out within the classrooms but this year, it has enjoyed more “visibility” by
making a display of Halloween stuff at the hallway of the school: skeletons in a
monk disguise, loaves of bread in a pumpkin shape, magazines with Halloween
articles, etc.
In the classrooms, pupils study the traditions of the feast
and its related vocabulary:
Jacko´lantern,pumpkin,ghost, spider, witch,broom,
skeleton, vampire, candy, etc.
It also trick and treating was carriedout,
delivering some candy to the pupils meanwhile they have to choose between
“trick” or “treat”. Later, the jack o´lantern or Halloween pumpkin was drawn
lots .
It has been a nice and funny experience and a peculiar way to learn a
language by its culture, but never losing the teaching aspect, otherwise, these
festivals take the risk of being a meaningless fuzz distracting the pupils from
their learning activities.
Waitingfor next year: HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
